Tech giant opens new data centre

Brackengate will be the location of one of three new data centres with an investment value of R 20 billion for digital giant Amazon.

James Vos the Mayco member for Economic Opportunities in Cape Town visited the construction site in Brackenfell for a walkabout with the project team. “Over the last two years the City’s Investment and Enterprise Department has worked tirelessly with Amazon to facilitate the expansion on this digital giant,” says Vos. “These centres will provide companies, paricularly in the tech space with the capability to drive major efficiencies and be globally competitive. It also helps cement Cape Town’s status as the global tech hub of Africa.”

He adds that this investment represents high growth potential for the Cape Town economy and its people. “We will continue to lead and position our City as one of the leading investment destinations in Africa.” Besides Amazon’s investment into data centres, they have also been expanding the call centre side of their business in Cape Town. “Last year they added over a 1 000 people to their call centre operation and we have been in talks with them about some new innovative ways they intend to expand their operations massively over the next few years,” says Vos.

Amazon is not the only international company expanding its call centre footprint in Cape Town, according to Vos, as over 5 000 new jobs in the international call centre industry were created last year, which is an indication of the momentum building in the city to attract international call centres to our shores. “Because of its booming tech ecosystem, our city has emerged as a tech and onnovation hub; and as the leader in the information technology sector with more tech start-ups than anywhere else in South Africa.”

“In addition, Cape Town has the largest telecommunications market and the most venture capital activity in South Africa, accounting for 75% of the country’s venture capital deals.”

“As the innovation and tech hub of Africa, our message is simple. We are open for business and ready to work with our partners across Africa and globally to build connections through tech and innovation that will not only build our economy, but that will also see us finding lasting solutions for creating a prosperous Africa.”
